Job Description And Duties

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer (Civil) (TE Civil) in the Office of Structure Materials (OSM).

Under direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer, the TE Civil will perform the duties of a Materials Engineering and Testing Services Representative (METS Rep.) within the OSM. The Primary function of the OSM is to ensure the materials and products used in California Department of Transportation (Department) construction projects comply with contract requirements. The METs Rep serves as the single point of contact between METS and its customers for all projects within assigned area. In this capacity keeps up to date on all structural and roadway materials issues on projects. Ensures all Quality Control Plans are reviewed and responded to on time. Prepares reports transmitting technical recommendations for their assigned projects, NCR Summary Reports, Materials Issues by Bid Item Report, and METS Rep. Monthly Summary reports. Must have knowledge of the Departments construction process and basic design principles, the materials used in projects including welding, precast concrete, coatings, roadway materials, structural fasteners, and general materials mechanics and properties. Industry practices for fabrication of structural components. Must have the ability to interpret plans, specifications, and shop drawings, communicate clearly and efficiently.

Special Requirements

    • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. The SOQ must address the following:

  • Describe your experience conducting materials Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) operations as it pertains to structures, bridges, and roadways.
  • Describe your knowledge and experience assessing materials, making materials related engineering decisions and conducting of laboratory test results analysis.
  • Describe your experience with Source Inspection operations as it pertains to steel fabricators, precast concrete fabricators, concrete batch plants, hot mix Asphalt Concrete (AC) plants, and fabrication and manufacturers of construction material.
  • Describe your experience conducting reviews and analyzing QC/QA reports to determine causes of nonconformity with the project’s plans and specifications.
  • Describe your experience in coordinating with various stakeholders (design, construction, local agencies, etc.) in order to successfully complete the assigned tasks.
  • Describe your experience regarding the ability to balance working on multiple projects simultaneously.
