POSITION SUMMARY
Our Engineering/Public Works group performs work involving the application of civil engineering skills for evaluation, scoping, development/improvement, and construction of civil and public works projects. The Principal Civil Engineer is responsible for meeting financial performance objectives established for the group and assigned projects, including staff productivity, client relations, profitability, and financial forecasting. Participation in business development through existing and new client contacts is anticipated but will be supported by business development staff. At various times will serve as Project Manager, Project Engineer, or client manager with responsibility for applying extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and experience in broad areas and applying advanced techniques, theory, concepts, and judgment. Projects include commercial, public works, and water resources from design through construction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Project Manager Plans, coordinates, and directs projects ranging from a large and important engineering project to a number of smaller projects with many complex features, and includes responsibility for financial control and billing.Oversight and guidance of staff on assigned projects for preparation of deliverables.Develop and maintain contact with assigned project clients. Achieve customer satisfaction through quality, on-time deliverables. Project Engineer Select design/evaluation procedures and criteria for a variety of projects and is the engineer-of-record responsible for engineering work products of the group. Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate engineering work involving conventional and innovative engineering practices, design/evaluation techniques, and evaluation techniques. Applies extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices, identifies the need for work by other design professionals and collaborates with other professionals on projects requiring broad professional practice areas. Evaluate a variety of complex issues such as conflicting design/permitting requirements. Develops and holds responsibility for design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications. Performs and/or directs calculations/engineering evaluations using engineering formulas and skills. Perform/supervise design work using computer-aided or manual techniques. Directs, prepares, and reviews project drawings and sketches in conjunction with other technical staff. Prepares stamped reports and correspondence concerning assigned projects. Performs peer review for supervised staff and seeks peer review before professional product release.Serves as a technical advisor to project team members, clients, and other design professionals.Monitor and interpret regulatory requirements and changes. Engineer Staff Manager Supervision/Coordination/Direction of engineering and support personnel is usual at this level. Evaluates staffing needs and participates in staff recruitment. Track group performance, coordinate work assignments, arbitrate disputes.Monitor individual performance through written evaluations, compensation reviews, etc.Mentors and assists junior staff through training, career development, and skills improvement.Provide senior technical guidance and training. Project/Business Development Identify and pursue business opportunities consistent with the capabilities and risk preferences of company supported by Business Development staff.Prepare/approve proposals and bids, including work scopes and cost estimates.Implement loss prevention strategies in all work.
NECESSARY SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
QUALIFICATIONS
California Professional Engineer Registration required plus 10 or more years of relevant progressive experience gained after PE license.Five or more years of experience managing others.Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Master's degree preferred.Knowledge of MS Office Suite applications and engineering design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation.Succinct technical writing style.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
This position will require the ability to sit at a desk working four to eight hours with appropriate rest and meal breaks.Ability to visit project sites for evaluation in the scoping, planning, and execution of projects.Ability to perform observation/monitoring/documentation at construction or project sites.Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), protective clothing, possibly a respirator, etc.Ability to monitor a computer screen for extended periods of time.Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs. on occasion.Ability to travel 10-40% throughout the markets we serve (primarily Northern California).
