Job Description

Summary

The Advanced Mechanical Engineer is a Mechanical Engineering team member for industrial and commercial construction projects.  Work performed will include mechanical engineering support for all project phases from concept design through construction documents phases, plus project cost estimating.  The Advanced Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for plan and work coordination and ensuring effective communications with other engineering disciplines. The Advanced Mechanical Engineer will partner with other departments, including estimators, project managers, and field foremen to ensure project success. Our engineers have the unique opportunity to see a project through all the phases of its life-cycle from drawings through to completion by our field crews.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development and coordination of site mechanical design for a wide range of industrial facilities with high awareness of safety and commercial issues.
  • Analysis and design of mechanical systems including HVAC, industrial gases, fluid pumping and piping, industrial refrigeration, and manufacturing process support.
  • Ensure proper application of thermodynamic principles in industrial refrigeration and HVAC engineering and energy consumption modeling work.
  • Prepare engineering documents and equipment specifications per work requirements; review preliminary and approve final equipment selections and drawing submittals.
  • Design and develop batch and continuous manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to other departments / disciplines.
  • Work closely with estimating department to provide accurate project costs for use in the bidding process.
  • Assist Project Managers in dealing with complex customer issues; researches the issues fully and provides workable, cost effective solutions to satisfy customers.
  • Contribute to an effective team environment by exemplifying clear communications, being proactive to resolve issues as they arise, and modeling collaborative skills.
  • Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches to incorporate in drawings by Designers / Drafters.
  • Generate designs with efficient use of construction materials with an overall emphasis on ease of construction and completed product meeting the expectations of the client.
  • Prepare construction drawing and specification packages as well as supporting calculation packages.
  • Participate in plan reviews and obtain building permit approvals.
  • Review mechanical shop drawings and data; interfacing with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines and designers.
  • Account for possible project challenges or constraints and proactively seek to manage challenges.
  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control checking of work completed by other Mechanical Engineers for projects with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Education & Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in an industrial or consulting engineering setting with progressively increased responsibilities.
  • Preferred Professional Engineering license in MN or another state with ability to obtain MN PE license within 6 months.
  • Good understanding of applicable model codes addressing mechanical design/engineering (e.g., ASME, NFPA, ARI, ASHRAE, ANSI, and similar).
  • Experience with site mechanical design, including steam or hot water, chilled water, HVAC, industrial gases, building automation, and similar systems.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills, with ability to comprehend and interpret complex instructions, in English.
  • Capable, eligible and willing to visit clients at their industrial facilities.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment – extensive sitting at desk and computer; some standing, bending at the waist, stooping and reaching required; ability to lift 5-20 pounds occasionally.

  • May require physical ability to walk over uneven surfaces, work from elevated surfaces, and navigate around or climb on industrial equipment (i.e. climbing ladders, stairs, etc.) and related requirements.
  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.
