Job Description

The Structural Engineer position is responsible for implementation of cost minimizing strategies as well as leadership to improve schedules and field productivity. This position will utilize their precast and prestress experience to coordinate closely with the precast production engineering team. This person sets the standard for structural design capability while mentoring and developing less experienced engineers. This is accomplished through:

Leadership

  • Create foundational trust based on the highest integrity and respecting the dignity of every person
  • Champion the thought, planning and execution of company work to assure creative solutions
  • Provide informational support and interaction with the design team, project management, and field operations creating an exchange of information leading to improvement and cost reductions
  • Motivate and create development plans for long term success of engineering consultants
  • Build an internal team of engineers and drafters to provide high-quality structural engineering services for the company
  • Value relationships with clients, vendors, consultants and employees

Creation/Development/Maintenance

  • Develop and maintain standard details necessary for efficient structural design and detailing
  • Provide preliminary engineering designs, including cost effective options, in support of design-build proposals
  • Perform routine engineering functions and calculations for structural precast building components; i.e., insulated wall panels, double tees, beams and columns

o  Design connections

o  Stripping, handling, shipping and erection analysis

o  Design bracing and shoring

o  Design and detail repairs for nonconformance items

o  Engineering of foundations and structural steel

  • Coordinate with MEPFP design-build sub-contractors construction documents
  • Perform Construction Administration tasks: Review Shop Drawings, Respond to RFI’s, and jobsite visits Manage risk through effective negotiations and continuous communication with strategic engineering partners
  • Coordinate all outsourced structural engineering consultants to ensure quality, speed, efficient design, and conformance to overall design intent

 

Engineering Control ‐ Review/Check/Approve/Respond

  • Questions from design team, architect, PM’s, field staff, executives, owners, subcontractors, and/or consultants about any current project
  • Questions from colleagues or engaged consultants relating to proposals
  • Submittals and drawings related to engineering

Success of the position is measured by:

  • Profitability of projects
  • Cost of errors / omissions / rework leading to profit loss
  • Volume of structural engineering completed by consultants versus in-house engineering
  • Satisfactory completion of structural engineering on or ahead of schedule
  • Management of digital files and workspace organization
  • Communication with internal design team to avoid errors

To perform this job successfully the employee must have the following:

  • 5 - 10 years precast/prestressed design experience preferred
  • Registered P.E. - IN, KY and Ohio (or ability to become registered)
  • Experience with architectural and structural projects
  • Experience with design of building foundations, equipment foundations, and structural steel
  • Product experience includes double tees, columns, beams, spandrels, shear walls, insulated walls and cladding
  • Familiar with IBC building codes
  • PCI and ACI design requirements
  • Ability to communicate in written and verbal formats of English at a professional business level
