Job Description

The Senior Bridge Engineer is responsible for performing complex calculation and design tasks to develop plans, details, specifications, and quantities related to the design and detailing of bridge and other structural elements for a variety of highway and railroad bridge types, retaining walls, and other structural elements. The Senior Engineer will be expected to perform, coordinate, and delegate tasks to other staff, as appropriate, to drive the development and production of deliverables, on-time and on or under budget to meet client specifications outlined in the contract for these types of structural components. He/she will also be responsible for overseeing the development and mentoring of younger staff to promote a high-quality, innovative, well-rounded design team. The Senior Engineer will also be responsible for participating in project proposal preparation and interview teams, as requested, assisting in the development innovative technical concepts that will differentiate company from its competitors, developing and maintaining relationships with key clients’ technical counterparts to understand emerging trends and issues, and sharing intelligence with company's client service teams.

 

General Responsibilities

  • Lead aspects of projects and tasks in the role of a senior task leader related to the design of bridges and other structural elements, promoting innovative design and construction strategies and safety in construction
  • Develop and oversee the development of plans, specifications, and estimates for a variety of bridge types and structural elements
  • Develop and oversee the development of alternative analyses, shop drawing reviews, prepare technical reports and responses to RFIs, etc.
  • Be accountable for all internal processes and procedures (e.g. QC, safety, etc.), promote consistency and best practices, and conform to all standards and code requirements as it relates to the above responsibilities on your projects
  • Demonstrate excellent technical and professional engineering skills commensurate with years of experience
  • Develop/meet assigned project goals, objectives, and budgets to ensure on-schedule, accurate completion of all project deliverables within or below budget
  • Ensure that the design team adheres to company safety, quality, and technical policies and procedures during the execution of the team’s projects
  • Demonstrate a proactive, collaborative approach with project team members, client representatives, subconsultants, contractors, review agencies and others as appropriate for the project
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Practice Leader

Education/Skills/Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required, post-graduate degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience; Illinois Structural Engineering License required
  • Involvement in various industry societies to maintain visibility and professional currency by actively participating in professional organizations and encourage younger staff to do the same
  • Strong computer software skills, specifically in the area of Microsoft Office, AASHTOWare BrR, MathCad, LARSA 4D, LUSAS, RISA-3D, MerlinDash, LEAP Bridge Concrete, MicroStation or similar software
  • Strong technical written and verbal communications skills with an ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts
  • Proven ability to provide leadership to multiple levels of staff
  • Promote high performance and consistent accountability for all project team participants
  • Ability to represent company effectively to staff, clients, and the community in general in a technical capacity
