Job Description

WSDOT is currently seeking an innovation and talented individual to fill a vacant Transportation Engineer 2 position located in Tumwater. This position will serve as a Design Engineer responsible for all civil aspects of project design including roadway, stormwater, earthwork, cost estimating, design documentation and preparation of plans, specifications and engineers estimates (PS&E) for construction contracts. Our top candidate must be detail-oriented, possess outstanding technical skills, and have the ability to work comfortably at a desk.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Engineer will:

Prepare and review design, documentation, contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates for geometric and stormwater design and documentation.
Use engineering design tools including MicroStation and InRoads to develop roadway geometric elements that meet WSDOT Design Manual standards.
Write design documents as required in the Design Manual, including tech memos, Intersection Control Evaluation, Access Revision Report and Design Analysis.
Analyze projects to determine applicable stormwater requirements.
Design conveyance systems, stormwater treatment and flow control Best Management Practices (BMPs).
Develop conceptual plans, write technical requirements, and compile contract appendices for design-build request for proposal documents.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, at least one of the following are required:

Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
Certification as an Engineer-in-Training and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
A Master’s degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.

In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:

Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods and practices and the ability to apply them to the assigned projects to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
Experience communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
Proven skills to examine, develop, and propose alternate solutions to complex elements of a project.
Experience in reviewing engineering plans and specifications for compliance with established standards.
Experience in being able to effectively work both individually and within a diverse team environment.
Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
Experience in working independently and prioritize workload and handle multiple assignments.

It Is Preferred That Qualified Candidates Also Have

Knowledge in the use of InRoads for design projects per WSDOT standards.
Knowledge in the use of Microstation for plan sheet development per WSDOT standards.
Certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
Professional Engineer License in Washington State.
